Preamble

We are living through a golden age of tabletop roleplaying—and a crowded one. Every month brings new systems, new settings, new Kickstarters promising to revolutionize the hobby. Most cost $30, $50, $100 to even try. Many disappear. Players hesitate. GMs commit to "one more campaign" of the game everyone already knows.

This is not a criticism. Making games is hard. Paying rent is harder.

But we choose a different path.

Article I

The Core Rules Are Free

The complete Starforged V1.2 Player's Handbook—every rule, every class, every archetype, every faction—will always be available at no cost. PDF. Web. Print-at-home. No "basic rules" vs. "core rules." No "free trial." No expiration date.

If you have a device that can read this, you can play Starforged.

Article II

Free Means Free

We will not:

  • Gate character options behind paywalls
  • Release "essential" supplements that fix the free rules
  • Use "free" as a funnel to extract money through dark patterns
  • Sell your data to fund the game
  • Show you ads to "subsidize" your experience

We will:

  • Offer premium physical products for those who want them
  • Release expanded content as optional purchases
  • Accept direct support through Patreon or tips
  • Partner with platforms that respect your privacy
Article III

Access Is A Feature

A free game is not a lesser game. It is a more accessible game.

  • A teenager with no disposable income can run a campaign for their friends
  • A curious 5e player can try sci-fi without a $60 gamble
  • A library can print copies for their community
  • A school club can learn collaborative storytelling
  • A solo player can explore the void on a Tuesday night without justification

Every barrier removed is a story gained.

Article IV

Community Is The Currency

If you cannot pay with money, pay with participation:

  • Play the game. Roll dice. Make choices. Let the Infamy system surprise you.
  • Tell the story. Post actual play reports. Record sessions. Write fiction.
  • Build the world. Create homebrew factions, archetypes, planets. Share them.
  • Welcome newcomers. Answer questions. Run intro sessions. Be the guide you wish you had.
  • Speak honestly. Review us. Criticize us. Help us improve V1.3.

The value of Starforged is not in its PDF. It is in the thousand crews navigating the void, the legends they forge, and the community that remembers them.

Article V

Transparency In Sustainability

We will always explain how this project survives:

  • Physical sales fund art, layout, and printing costs
  • Optional supplements (setting guides, campaign frameworks, VTT modules) compensate contributors
  • Direct support (Patreon, Ko-fi) funds ongoing development and community events
  • Licensing (for third-party commercial use) ensures the ecosystem grows

We commit to annual financial transparency reports. If the model fails, we will say so. If we change course, we will explain why.

Article VI

The Void Belongs To You

Starforged is released under a Creative Commons license. You may:

  • Remix the rules for your own game
  • Publish and sell your own Starforged content
  • Translate the game into other languages
  • Port the setting to other systems

We only ask that you credit the original, share alike, and do not use our logos to imply official endorsement without permission.

The Great Disconnection broke the galaxy's central control. We see no reason to impose our own.

Article VII

Forever Is A Promise

We cannot predict the future. Markets shift. Teams dissolve. But we make this commitment:

As long as Starforged exists in any form, the V1.2 core rules will remain free. If the current stewards can no longer maintain it, we will transfer ownership to the community or archive it with a permanent open license.

This manifesto is not legally binding. It is morally binding. We stake our reputation—our Infamy—upon it.
